Homemade Wheat Bread

Every Sunday I make three loaves of wheat bread.  I like to give one away and save two for my family to eat during the week.  The kids love their bread slathered with peanut butter while I like mine with one egg in the morning.  Yum!

Here is the recipe I found at Allrecipes.com for Simple Whole Wheat Bread.

Wheat Bread

  • 3 cups warm water
  • 2 packages dry active yeast
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 5 cups bread flour
  • 3 Tbsp melted butter
  • 1/3 cup honey
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 3 1/2 cups whole wheat flour

1.  Mix water, yeast and 1/3 cup honey.  Add bread flour, stir and let sit for 30 minutes.

2.  Mix in melted butter, 1/3 cup honey and salt.  Add wheat flour.  Knead until just pulling away from the counter, but still sticky.  May take an additional 1-3 cups of flour.

3.  Place in greased bowl, cover with towel and let sit until doubled in size (usually 1 hour – 1 1/2 hours).

4.  Punch dough down and divide into 3 loaves.  Place in greased loaf pans and let sit until dough sets above pan.

5.  Bake for 25-30 minutes in a preheated 350 degree oven.

6.  Lightly brush the tops of the bread with melted butter to keep the crust from cracking.

Notes:  I use King Arthur Organic Flour

Happy baking!
